The Union Pacific Railroad, is a freight-hauling railroad that operates 8,300 locomotives
over 32,200 miles (51,800 km) routes in 23 U.S. states west of Chicago and New Orleans.
Union Pacific is the second largest railroad in the United States after BNSF.
Union Pacific and BNSF Railway have a duopoly on transcontinental freight rail
lines in the western United States.

Between 1869 and 1971, Union Pacific operated passenger service throughout its historic "Overland Route.
" The last passenger train operated by UP was the westbound City of Los Angeles, arriving
at LA Union Station on May 2. Since then, Union Pacific has satisfied
its common carrier requirements by hosting Amtrak trains (see Hosted Amtrak trains).
